Hue&Shades: Lampshades

Meet: Dina Makanji

The designer and maker behind Hue&Shades, she spent the last 15 years in the design and animation industry where she became obsessed by colour, light and texture.

Dina was first inspired to create a string lampshade after seeing the unique construction technique in Europe. She started by making one for her children's bedroom, and quickly fell in love with the process and distinctive look of the finished pieces.

The Stripe Hype

Today Dina makes her string lampshades as a way to get back to making tactile work with her hands.

She carefully selects her colour combinations, favouring a thick stripe design reminiscent of deck chairs and colourful sweets. Her shades are as much about how they feel, and the mood they create within the home as much as how they look.

She's also highly conscious about where she sources her materials from, choosing high quality British suppliers, natural yarns and recycled or remnant materials where possible.
